Georgia Montalvo
Artist Statement
My work examines memory, childhood, and emotional experience through imagery drawn from animals, birds, and the natural world. Raised in the mountains of Telluride, CO, I came to understand nature as both refuge and mirror, shaping how I process memory, identity, and emotional distance. Within my prints, animals—especially the blue heron—function as emotional surrogates, holding personal weight while resisting direct narrative.
Working in reduction monotype and Tetrapack intaglio, I build layered compositions that echo the instability of memory—how it fragments, resurfaces, and subtly shifts over time. Repetition and variation across the series reflect the way certain feelings and moments persist, returning in altered forms. Birds recur as figures suspended between grounding and escape, intimacy and distance.
This body of work becomes a space for navigating interior landscapes, where personal histories are translated into visual language, and where quiet, often unspoken emotional experiences can be held, reconsidered, and shared.
