Also Our Campus

The numerical minority of individuals from diverse identities on campuses that are predominantly White, cisgender, and heterosexual makes visibility and access to the community challenging, further isolating these students. Community-building opportunities and resources for students are primarily built for those in the majority or neglecting the intersectional reality of many of our diverse students, which creates further barriers for those who are multiply marginalized. Additionally, emerging adult students on college campuses often cultivate community and belonging with behaviors, such as alcohol use, that increase vulnerability to experiences of sexualized and identity-based harms. As such, the common social and behavioral contexts that foster increased belonging among many students may also be associated with elevated risks of harm.
